CHURCH ONLINE SUNDAYS @ 10
My name is Dan Janzen, and I’m reaching out to recruit Calgary churches for a community-building initiative! In partnership with the Calgary Sport & Social Club (CSSC), I’m organizing a fall season of ultimate frisbee specifically for churches.

I'm inviting churches to commit to entering at least one team (or more, for larger churches with multiple service times). Each team would include both members of the church and individuals from the broader community who do not currently attend church.

This initiative aims to build community in three ways:

By giving church members a new way to connect with one another.

By creating opportunities for churches to interact and build relationships with other congregations.

By inviting people outside the church to connect with church members in a setting where they may feel more comfortable.

League Details:

Format: 5-on-5 ultimate frisbee. Teams typically consist of 10 players, allowing for two lines that alternate each point. Each line must include at least 2 women, so most teams have around 6 men and 4 women—though that’s flexible.

Community Involvement: Each team should reserve 3 spots for players from the community who do not attend church. These could be friends, coworkers, neighbors, or family members.

Schedule: The season begins on Sunday, September 7, with games taking place Sunday afternoons at various athletic parks in South Calgary. The season runs for 5 Sundays, with a break on Thanksgiving weekend.

Cost: $520 per team, payable to CSSC. Each team can decide how to split the fee, but ideally, church members would cover the cost so that community invitees can play for free.

I chose ultimate frisbee because it’s simple, fun, and easy to learn, with minimal equipment required. For those unfamiliar with it, ultimate is a fast-paced, non-contact sport—often described as a mix between soccer and football but played with a disc! It’s self-officiated and suitable for all skill levels (CSSC requires players to be 18 or older). It involves running, throwing, catching, and—most importantly—having a great time.

I’ll also be happy to provide a tutorial video for anyone who would like a quick intro to the game.

Thank you so much for taking the time to consider this opportunity. If this sounds like something your church would like to be part of, I’d love to hear from you!

God bless,

Dan Janzen
